Off the Beaten Path in Greece

Greece has over 6,000 islands. Of course, everyone who’s been to Greece knows that Santorini has the best sunset views; Crete is great for exploring and learning about ancient culture; Mykonos is the place to go for a party. But, what about the myriad of other islands? All boasting spectacular views, gorgeous beaches, and far fewer crowds.

Here are 5 Greek islands off the beaten path.

Kythira, Ionian

Kythira was once the junction for sailors, conquerors, and merchants. You can reach the hillside capital, Hora, by following the white-washed paths, where you’ll find an old Venetian castle. The island offers a multitude of waterfalls and gorges as well as over 30 beaches. Fun fact: Kythira is said to be the birthplace of the goddess, Aphrodite.

Serifos, Cyclades

Serifos is a havan for Greek artists. When you stare a the stacked white cubes alongside the mountain it is no wonder why so many painters favor the island. Visiting the port town of Livada will provide with you clean, uncrowded beaches and give you a glimpse of what the Greek islands used to be like. The locals are incredibly friendly and many people consider the main town of Hora to be one of the most breathtaking in all of Greece.

Alonissos, Sporades

Alonissos is perfect for anyone wishing to get out into nature. The island has a rugged, awe-inspiring landscape filled with olive groves and orchards that look like they’re from straight out of a fairy tale. The surrounding waters are a part of the National Maritime Park and are home to the Mediterranean monk seal, dolphins, and a number of rare seabirds. Folk medicine is very popular with the locals here who will tell you how to cure anything that ails you with neverending indigenous herbs.

Ikaria, Aegean

Have you ever heard the story of Icarus, who flew too close to the sun? Visit his hometown in the North Aegean Sea. The people of this island know how to slow down and enjoy life. The restaurants and tavernas have very flexible hours and most shops don’t open until noon or later. This is the place to come and truly relax. Ikaria is known for its residents’ love of traditional festivals. Expect to be enthusiastically invited and involved if there happens to be an event during your stay.

Koufonisia, Cyclades

The population of Koufonisia is roughly 400 and many of those locals still fish for a living. There is no need for vehicles as you can walk anywhere you want to go easily. There is a special, laidback vibe on the island, and many visitors even camp on the beaches during the summer months. The local Tamarisk trees even serve as umbrellas! White sand, clear water, and nothing to do besides rest and relax. Fun fact: Archaeologists have found hundreds of broken figurines dating back to 2500 BC on the rock island of Keros.
